FFNC State Youth League teams meet Hunter Valley this Sunday

Thursday, May 25th, 2006

Oakes Oval will play host to round 8 of the SSI State Youth League on Sunday when FFNC meet up with Hunter Valley.

FFNC have started to show some promise of late with the Grade 13, 14 boys & Grade 15 girls returning home victorious from last weekends trip to Tamworth.

The first meeting of these two Zones had Hunter well in control and the FFNC sides will certainly have to step up again if they are to send the visitors home with their tail between their legs.

Games kick off at 9.00am with the Grade 14 boys, followed by the Grade 13’s at 10.15 and the Grade 15 boys at 11.30am.  The girls will this week play at Crozier Oval at 11.00am.

Teams continue to jockey for position in Tursa Premier League

Thursday, May 25th, 2006

Seven rounds into the Tursa Premier League for 2006 and teams continue to jump about the ladder with upsets and inconsistent performances the only obvious trend at this stage.

Lennox Head are the big surprise with an ageing backline and a mixture of youth and experience elsewhere. The Sharks have caught many a side out and going into round 8 are looking at making it five wins on the trot when they meet Casino at Oakes Oval at 5.00pm

Byron Bay continue to lead the pack but following a tough trip to Casino last week they will face a much harder test against Workers FC who typify the inconsistency which is plagueing sides this year.

In the second game of the double header at Oakes Oval, Goonellabah will take on Italo Stars in a match that may have a huge impact on either sides title hopes.  Goonellabah having lost only one game this season are the dark horses of the competition and everyone is waiting to see them recapture the form of last year which took them to the Point Score Championship and the Grand Final.

Stars have had some unexpected results to date and with their lineup should be secure in the top five rather being third from bottom at this stage of the season.  This game will kick off at 7.00pm

Thistles started the campaign brightly but over the last month have struggled to pick up anything from their recent outings. The trip to Maclean is a dangerous one at the best of times but when you are in poor form the prospect of meeting the Bobcats is daunting.  Maclean should take the points here.

Rovers returned to winning ways last weekend to maintain touch with the leaders. The visit of Ballina to Nielson Park should give them the prospect of closing the 6 point gap to Byron, but the Seahorses have shown that they will make teams work for the full 90 minutes.

Top of table clash in Men’s First Division

Thursday, May 25th, 2006

After weeks of ups and downs the top two sides in FFNC First Division will meet as South Lismore take on Burringbar this saturday at Caniaba Street Reserve from 5.00pm.

The last month has seen Souths, and Bangalow hold down the top spot but both succumbed to Murwillumbah Saints in respective weeks and as a result let Burringbar creep up unnoticed.

The outcome on saturday should be a close one with experts tipping Souths to take the honours at home, with Burringbar a little jaded from the bus trip down.

In other games Tweed Heads should be able to continue their rise up the ladder as they play bottom side Murwillumbah Hammers, and with top five teams Alstonville and Bangalow up against each other Tweed could just sneak into the top five on the back of a good result.

Murwillumbah Saints have a local derby against an inconsistent Kingscliff outfit.  Saints have taken on the mantle of giant killers after the defeats over Souths and Bangalow so they won’t want to let their guard down this week and maintain their spot in the top four.

Pottsville should be the big winners from this round if other results go their way as they take on Uki.  A solid win may see them jump back into the top five.

In the remaining fixture Woodburn will take on Tumbulgum in a game which should see the victor move away from the relegation zone.

Congestion rules in Southern Cross Credit Union Women’s Premier League

Thursday, May 18th, 2006

With Rovers sitting 9 points clear of the pack the Southern Cross Credit Union Women’s Premier League looks to become a one horse race.

The remaining teams excluding Ballina who are firmly rooted to the bottom of the ladder are tied on 6 points so the battle for the semi’s will certainly be focused on the minor placings.

This weekends fixtures bring Rovers up against Alstonville who may be just the team to upset the league leaders having already caused a surprise when they met Workers in round 4.

Workers should pick up another 3 points when they take on Ballina while 2nd placed Goonellabah host Byron.

Lennox Stun Rovers In TURSA Premier League

Thursday, May 18th, 2006

Lennox Head moved into second spot on the ladder with a solid 3 - 1 win over Rovers on Saturday which looking ahead to this weekend should set up another cracker of a game when they meet local rivals Ballina.

The Seahorses were just outclassed last week succumbing to a rampant Byron Bay 2 - 1.  Although the scoreline looks deceptive the Ballina lads only hit form when Clint Colless and Justin Stockham were introduced late in the game.

Goonellabah will have to play to their best when they meet Thistles away and given recent form for both teams this match could go either way.

Casino this weekend will have a tough one when they start Beef Week celebrations against Byron.  The Cobras may just catch the Rams in a complacent mood so watch out for an upset here.

Workers FC will host Maclean and with both teams having mixed results of late this too could go either way.  For the winners a top four spot will be cemented for the next few weeks giving them some security.

Sunday football also returns with a local derby between Rovers and Stars.  Stars had a great result last week banging in 6 against Casino while Rovers have lost two on the trot.  This should prove to be the match of the round.

Coaches To Benefit From Regional Conference

Wednesday, May 17th, 2006

NCAS  Sport coaches on the North Coast are set to benefit from a coaching conference being held on 3-4 June at the NSW Sport and Recreation Centre at Lennox Head. Sponsored by local community credit union, BCU, and aptly named “Smarter Coaching 2006”, the conference will involve an intensive two-day program of quality and up-to-date information, relevant to coaches of all levels and experience.

The program includes lectures, workshops, panel discussions and practical sessions on sports science testing and interpretation, functional strength training and strength development, total athlete management, skill acquisition, program planning and periodisation, the role of recovery, implementing effective sports psychology, new technologies in coaching, and coaching challenges in regionalised areas.  “There is no doubt that coaches in regional areas have greater difficulty in accessing development opportunities compared to their city-based counterparts.” said Tony Clarke, NCAS executive director.

“Too often coaches have to travel to capital cities to undertake coaching courses. In some cases, it’s just too difficult for regionally-based coaches to update or upgrade their qualifications, which stops the development. This conference directly addresses this problem by providing a high quality and practical conference within our own region”.

Attendance at the conference is open to any person who is either currently coaching, is interested in becoming a coach, or whose qualification has recently lapsed. The program is not-sport specific but will include examples from a broad range of sports. Attendance will provide log book credits under the National Coaching Accreditation Scheme. The regional conference has been made possible through the support of multiple partners, including naming rights sponsor, BCU.

BCU has a strong commitment to the communities in which we operate and is proud to be associated with the ongoing development of the North Coast community” said BCU Area Manager North, Graeme Green. “We were delighted to support the NCAS in past years with the Sport Smart program which assisted North Coast PDHPE students and their teachers. This Coaching Conference allows BCU to now support the development of coaches in our region, which we see as allowing enormous follow-on benefits to local sports clubs for many years to come” added Green.

NSW Sport & Recreation will host the live-in conference at their Lake Ainsworth Centre in Lennox Head, where there are excellent conference and sports facilities on-site to deliver the program. Southern Cross University, through its department of sports science of sport management, will also be supporting the conference. All sessions will be presented through a variety of different formats including lectures, discussion groups, active participation and displays. The program includes a conference dinner with keynote speaker, and a variety of overnight and day registration packages are available.

“It hasn’t been since the last coaching conference in 2002 that there will be so many coaching and sports professionals brought together on the North Coast” said Clarke. “The format of the conference will see local club coaches discussing issues that are relevant to them with the visiting elite coaches who have national and international experience.

“We are planning on it being very interactive, fun and educational weekend. All sports and clubs on the North Coast will benefit from this conference.” added Clarke.  The NCAS is supported by NSW Sport & Recreation and Southern Cross University. As well as the coaching conference, the NCAS is also known for its junior sports talent enhancement programs that it runs in 13 sports.

For further information and registration forms for the coaching conference, visit the Academy’s website at www.ncas.org.au or phone 6620-3073. Registrations close on 28th May 2006.

FFNC gets tough on abuse and violent conduct

Tuesday, May 16th, 2006

Parents Code of Conduct Football Far North Coast has adopted a get tough approach with players, officials and spectators as they work to stem the tide of abuse within the sporting community.

Responding to a gradual decline in the numbers of referees and club volunteers, FFNC in conjunction with Northern NSW Soccer Federation has introduced a spectator code of conduct which aligns with established codes of conduct for players and officials.

“The 2006 season has not started as positively as we had hoped, especially given the new spectator code of conduct and the provision of signs to all clubs which display the standards of behaviour we expect at FFNC fixtures.  Already a number of senior player’s coaches and managers have shown that they have not heeded the message that we will not tolerate the abuse of referees and club officials”, FFNC General Manager Matt Kelso stated.

“Any person involved with the game who is reported to FFNC for breaching these codes of behaviour will receive the maximum penalties we can apply, so in essence we are putting everyone on notice that we aim to clean up the game,” Kelso concluded.

The basic premise of the Aussie Sports code of behaviour is to promote fair play and respect between players, coaches and officials.  World body FIFA have been promoting the Fair Play message for years, something that is not lost on the local administration as FFNC annually recognize clubs for Fair Play with an award system for teams accumulating the least number of send off and cautions throughout the year.

FFNC are advocates of the Sports Rage initiatives introduced by the NSW Department of Tourism, Sport & Recreation and have been working closely with club administrators and the Department to introduce these strategies into the education systems within football.

Three wins for FFNC in SSI State Youth League

Monday, May 15th, 2006

Tamworth has proved to be a happy hunting ground for FFNC as our SYL teams secured three wins from four starts yesterday.

The Grade 14 Boys started the day in great style banging three unanswered goals past Northern Inland.  The 15 Girls then continued the trend with a fine 3- 0 win to bring a smile to the face of coach Marty Brennan and some positive vibes amongst the FFNC camp.

The Grade 13 Boys then took to the field and to everyones delight outclassed Northern Inland with 4 - 0 rout.

The only down side to the day was unfortunately the loss by the Grade 15 side who continue to battle away with limited numbers, relying on their younger counterparts to back up each week.  Recent results have seen this side make some progress but the loss to a much stronger and physical Northern Inland outfit has again put them on the back foot.

With a well deserved bye weekend coming up the FFNC camp has the chance to regroup and look forward to the visit of Hunter Valley on 28th May.
