Tweed Heads & Souths beneficiaries of weekend draw.

Thursday, June 29th, 2006

Tweed Heads and South Lismore look the most likely teams to gain maximum benefit from this weekends First Division fixtures.

With both sides firmly ensconced in the top five wins against their less fancied rivals will see them gain some ground over their rivals Bangalow and Burringbar.

Tweed will travel to second last Uki in a match that should go their way if hey can recover from the midweek draw to Bangalow on Wednesday night. Souths as a result of the catch up game between Tweed and Bangalow have dropped to fourth but with the visit of cellar dwellars Hammers the three points should see them close the gap on leaders Burringbar.

The Bandits face a tricky fixture against Alstonville who are desperate for the three points to extend the differential between themselves and the rest of the table.

Bangalow will also face a difficult game as they meet Woodburn who like Alstonville need to pick up the points to stay in touch with the top five.

In the remaining games Tumbulgum will tackle Saints, and Pottsville will host Kingscliff in two local derbies sure to bring out the best of all concerned.

Hornets season in the balance

Thursday, June 29th, 2006

Tursa Premier League LogoGoonellabah Hornets face what could be a season ending fixture on Sunday when they take on Richmond Rovers in the Tursa Premier League match of the round at Weston Park.

Goonellabah’s form this year has been disappionting with inconsistency blighting any chance they have of defending the Point Score Championship. The last outing against Byron showed some glimpses of the teams potential but the challenge in this second half of the season will be turning this potential into meaningfull results.

Rovers on the other hand started the season solidly but in recent weeks have also succumbed to inconsistency going down to Workers in their last start. A win here is a must if they are to maintain touch with the top two.

Lennox Head and Byron will go into there fixtures as favourites when they meet Maclean and Stars respectively but they will be made to work for the points as both Stars and Maclean have alot to play for, for Lennox the trip to Maclean may be more of a challenge as they conceded 5 the last time these two met.

Ballina will travel to Thistles with nothing but three points on their minds as they aim to move into the top five. With only 6 points seperating third and third last the top five make up is anything but guaranteed.

For Thistles 3 points could get them out of the bottom two and the dogfight for relegation and have them again thinking of a top five spot as well.

For Casino it is now do or die time as they have been rooted to the bottom of the ladder since the season started. The saving grace at this stage is that the only game they have won was against Workers, so an upset could be on the cards.

Cracking Games in store in Tursa Premier League

Friday, June 16th, 2006

Tursa Premier League LogoAction this Saturday in the Tursa Premier League throws up a plethora of tantilising fixtures with some real movement in the league table likey to be the outcome.

The match of the round is a close call with Casino hosting fellow strugglers Ballina in a game that could signal real trouble for either outfit and Goonellabah meeting league leaders Byron Bay in a must win for the Hornets if they want to stay in touch with the top five.

Lismore Workers will also meet Rovers in a local derby which will has all the hallmarks of an epic as again a top five spot is up for grabs, and elswhere Italo Stars will host Maclean in a match which both teams will need to win to stay in touch with the top five.

Second placed Lennox Head will also face a tough test as they travel to Thistles. This match could also shape their season as a slip up here could see them tumble down the ladder. For Thistles the three points are vital if they are to avoid the relegation dogfight that’s otherwise looming.

Burringbar squeeze out a four point lead in First Division

Friday, June 16th, 2006

Burringbar Bandits picked up a maximum 6 points over the long weekend to earn themselves a four point gap over second placed South Lismore.

With Tweed Heads now breathing over South’s shoulder and having a game in hand the second half of the season is set to be a real cracker.

Saturday sees the final game in the first round of fixtures and it is still anybodies championship with only seven points seperating first and fourth.

Burringbar’s lead is courtesy of a tough weekend as they were scheduled a saturday and monday fixture over the long weekend.  First up they toughed it out over a committed Alstonville scraping home 4-3 then on Monday it was more of a party atmosphere as they ran in twelve goals against strugglers Murwillumbah Hammers.

Other results went pretty much to form, but the local derby between Saints and Tweed Heads proved to be a sensational contest, with Tweed picking up the points on offer with a 2-0 win.

Tomorrow South Lismore will host Pottsville who set the early pace in the league but have since found it tough going.  The Pottsville lads have plenty to play for though with a top five spot on offer if they pick up the points.

Uki should prove to strong for Hammers but with a wooden spoon hanging over the heads of both teams there may just be that extra bit of motivation.  Alstonville, Bangalow and Burringbar all face dangerous foes as they take on Saints, Tumbulgum and Kingscliff respectively.

But the match of the round should be the Woodburn versus Tweed Heads battle as both teams will be desperate not to lose ground on their close rivals.

All in all this weekend could see some major upsets and surprises and most certainly some entertaining football.

Goonellabah stun Workers in Southern Cross Credit Union Womens Premier League

Wednesday, June 14th, 2006

SCCU Logo

Workers FC have again stumbled to a loss going down to a committed Goonellabah on Tuesday night in Southern Cross Credit Union Women’s Premier League action.

Meeting for the third time this season the Hornets were finally able to gain some revenge from earlier defeats and pick up a valuable three points.

In a tense first half both teams prodded forward neither giving any indication of their weaknesses.  The Hornets though showed more passion and seemed to be spurred on by Australia’s red hot win over Japan in the World Cup on Monday.

Goonellabah held their defensive shape well and this strong formation repelled Worker’s midfielders Kim Wraight and Sheree Coubrough time and time again.

This lack of penetration by Workers caused frustration and finally Goonellabah striker Allison Bell secured a well deserved 1-0 win over her old team with a fiery goal mid-way through the second half.

This success now brings Goonellabah into a three way tie for second place on the ladder alongside Byron and Workers.

This weekend Workers host a struggling Ballina while Alstonville face a huge challenge against the undefeated Richmond Rovers.

Goonellabah travel to Byron Bay for what will be the match of the round after this well earned win.

Tumbulgum may spring surprise in Men’s First Division

Friday, June 9th, 2006

Tumbulgum Rangers may be setting themselves for the giant killing tag when they host South Lismore on Monday in First Division action.

The Rangers are still in touch with the leaders and have been inconsistent so far but boasting a young and talented lineup this may just be time to for them to show the competition that they can compete at this level.

In other fixtures Burringbar are expected to take the three points off strugglers Murwillumbah Hammers, Alstonville will face a tough test against Kingscliff, Tweed Heads will meet Murwillumbah Saints in a local derby, Uki will face a tough test against third placed Bangalow and Pottsville will host Woodburn in a potentially season ending result at stake.
